In the mid 16 century, Richard Hemingway sued John Lacy of Brear
ley, gent., with regard to this estate. The property had origin
ally belonged to the Lacysbut on the suppression of the chantri
es during the first year of Edward VI it had been seized by th
e crown, due to, they said, having been of the Endowment of th
e chantry of St. John the Evangelist in Barnsley Church. The Cr
ownhad then Granted Northroyds to Ralph Boswell, who leased a m
oiety of it to Richard Hemingway. Hugh Lacy, therefore evited R
ichard who sought redress inthe Duchy Court of Lancaster, charg
ing Lacy with trespass, evicting him, andthreatening to beat o
r maim him if he would not allow Lacy to occupy the land. It a
ppears that Richard won the case and the family continued to liv
e there. In 1561 the witnesses for Lacy included, Thomas Heming
way of Soutowram, yeoman, aged 75, and John Hemingway of Soutowr
am, clotheir, aged 78.
Richard's son Henry bought the property in 1604.
