For the service s rendered the troops, as physician and minister, during the Kin g Phillip's War, hewas liberally rewarded by the general Cour t by a Grant of land which comprised the 1902 town of Voluntown . No man of his time exerted a wider influenceor commanded mor e respectful consideration from his fellow men. Rev. James was one of the founders and trutees of Yale Colleg e, New Haven, Connecticut, USA He was Senior Moderator of the Saybr ook snod which convened on September 9, 1698, and drew up the ce lebrated Saybrook Platform being then in the 69th year of his ag e. during his pastorate he baptized 1176 persons of all ages, a nd there were admitted to the Church 239 members. After 1694, w hen the right was conferred ujpon ministers to join persons in m arriage, he celebrated 44 marriages. His ministry in Stoningto n last fifty-five years-as a licentiate from 1664 - 1674 when h e ws ordained September 10, 1674 and then as a pastor to his dea th, December 30, 1719, 45 years 3 months 20 Days as an ordainde d pastor and a total of 55 years. He died in his 80th year.
