Note

He learned the business of a printer with his brother Charles, removed with him to Hudson, N.Y., and assisted in the publication of The Bee newspaper. In Jan., 1805, he removed to Herkimer, N. Y., where he published The Telescope, and the Farmers' Monitor, and subsequently other papers in the county.
He held the offices of justice of the peace, United States collector, judge of the county court, appointed 24 feb 1817, and first judge of Herkimer county, appointed Jan. 10, 1821, by Governor De Witt Clinton; which last position he held until Mar. 25, 1825; postmaster, etc. The new constitution having vacated all civil offices, and the tide of politics setting adversely, he retied to private life.
Thurlow Weed, Esq., of the Albany Evening Journal, who was well acquainted with mr. Holt, in a notice in his paper remarks:
In 1813, when we first made Mr. Holt's acquaintance, he was postmaster and justice of the peace in Herkimer, where he lived many years, greatly esteemed. Much later in life adverse fortune drove him back into a printing office in this city, where he worked as a journeyman, not only patiently but cheerfully. In all things Mr. Holt was an estimable man. In prosperity he was anxious about the welfare of others. In adversity, he was industrious, frugal and content; as a citizen, a parent, a friend, a politician and a Christian, he was upright, affectionate and faithful, uncompromising and conscientious.
