Note

Allen was captured by the Japanese, spent time in Changi prison & worked on the Burma railway. On arrival back in Adelaide at the end of the war, his family walked past him without recognition, such was his changed appearance due to near starvation. He rarely talked about the war, and when he did, only told jokes about having to steal items such as watches from the Japanese guards, then selling them to get money to buy food surreptitiously from local citizens.
