Note
In 1776 George Moore, Ballamore, Isle of Man and (son) James Moore, merchant, Glasgow entered into partnership with six others trading as Moores, Carrick & Co for The Ship Bank, with a capital of Pounds Sterling 12, 000. It appears that by 1783 the Moores had withdrawn from the partnership when a new partnership was formed and the firm became Carrick, Brown & Co. |
Note
Sir George Moore (1709-1787) was the Speaker of the House of Keys and their leader in the efforts to obtain better terms for Manx commerce after the Act of Revestment. It was largely due to his efforts that the Island was not annexed to Cumberland as previously planned. He was knighted in 1781, in recognition of his services. He was a major merchant very heavily involved in the running trade and owned various vessels. He was also a partner in a Glasgow bank. |
