Note

Edward Harrison Johnson, B.SC,
R.N.(RET.) (S. 1927, G. 1929, A.M. 1935,
M. 1952), who died on the 29th June 1962,
was born at Lancaster on the 13th July 1907.
He was educated at Friends School, Lancaster,
and received his technical education at Leeds
University. His practical training was undertaken
with Lancaster Corporation and Jas.
Williamson and Son, Lancaster, and in 1935
he joined St. Anne's Board Mills Co., Bristol.
On the outbreak of the 1939-45 War he
volunteered for service in the Royal Navy and
was concerned with degaussing ships against
the magnetic mine. He remained on this work
throughout the war, and then transferred to
the new Electrical Branch of the Royal Navy.
Here he found his true metier, both afloat and
ashore. After serving as fleet electrical officer
in the Far East Fleet in 1948-49 and in the
Home Fleet in 1952, he had barely started in
a key material post at the Admiralty when he
was struck down with heart trouble.
He accepted this philosophically and continued
to work for the Navy, as a civilian, as
far as his health permitted. He was greatly
respected both for his professional abilities
and for his integrity and courage. He is survived
by his widow and one daughter. L. B.
