Note
|
According to England 1911 census he lived at 29 Byron St., Ulverston, England. In 1920, according to the U.S. census, he lived in Roanoke VA. In 1930 he lived in Philadelphia. In 1942 he lived in Parkersburg, WV, where he worked for American Viscose Corporation, of which his father was a senior executive and, in fact, helped start the company in the U.S. at Marcus Hook, Pa. He graduated from Pennsylvania Military College, Chester, PA, where he was named the top cadet, and spent many years in Japan, where he worked for a chemical company. After retirement he returned to the U.S. Roy, his mother, and brothers James and Henry emigrated from their home at 39 Devonshire Rd., Ulverston. They sailed from Liverpool to Philadelphia on the SS Dominion which arrived on Aug. 6, 1911. Roy is buried in the Crewdson crypt at Lawn Croft Cemetery, Linwood, PA Guess who was with MacArthur when he returned to the Philippines (at Leyte). Another Crewdson. Roy(ston) Crewdson. (He) was an officer on MacArthur´s staff and was with him right through the war and into the occupation of Japan. (I am not sure if he was at Bataan) Uncle Roy stayed in Japan so long that he was hard to understand when he finally came home in the 1990s. A famous family story is one having to do with public policy in Japan during the occupation. Uncle Roy felt very strongly about a certain issue and wrote several memos to the great man about it Finally he went to his office to argue the case in person. He never got a word in. As soon as he opened the door, MacArthur, without raising his head from his desk, said ``God damn it Crewdson, I said NO´´. |
