John was a partner and director in McNaught & Co, of The Tything, Worcester. The company was founded in 1790 as Newton and Kinder. James Aldren McNaught joined the company in 1856, and his cousin, John Bourne Aldren, in 1884. The company was incorporated in 1909. In 1914 the company had 130 employees. McNaughts were carriage builders, and made many of the ceremonial and state carriages in use at the time, including the Lord Mayor of London's carriage, and for the Prince of Wales (Edward VII), and the Duke of Connaught, and showed vehicles at exhibitions as far afield as Calcutta, Philadelphia, Melbourne and Paris. McNaughts were later coach builders for specialist motor vehicles, and custom made luxury cars. The company were also upmarket car retailers, selling European marques such as Renault, Peugeot, Spyker, Panhard, Talbot, and Mercedes, and British marques such as BSA, Vauxhall, and Riley. They had showrooms at Albert Gate Mansions, 213-223, Knightsbridge in London. They also had premises at 7 & 8, Broad Street, Birmingham and 34 & 35, Princes Square, Hanover Square, London, as well as a showroom at the factory at The Tything.
