Thomas E.E. Spooner, 57, a Foreign Service officer in the U.S. Information Agency and a specialist in Asian affairs, died of a heart attack Dec. 30 at his home in Washington. Mr. Spooner was born in Detroit. He graduated from the University of Michigan, where he also received a master's degree in library science. In 1966, he moved to Washington and joined the USIA. His assignments abroad included two tours of duty in Indonesia and tours in Thailand, Singapore, Norway and Mexico. He spoke Indonesian, Norwegian and Spanish. At the time of his death, Mr. Spooner was acting director of the office of academic programs at USIA. In that post, he was in charge of administering major government student exchange programs, including the Fulbright program. Survivors include his wife, Yanti Spooner, and two children, Thomas Krishna Spooner and Mirja Spooner, all of Washington. |
