Son of a farmer, trained at OAC and Iowa State Coll, Grisdale joined the staff of the Central Experimental Farm, Ottawa, in 1899, and in 1911 succeeded William SAUNDERS as director. He became deputy minister of agriculture, the first agronomist in this post, in 1918, and was a powerful figure in Ottawa, sitting on the National Research Council and leading the Canadian delegations at the 1926 and 1928 imperial conferences on co-ordinating research.
