Memories of Barbara Halstead of her Great Aunts Ethel and Evelyn are in their later years when she used to visit them at their home in Barnoldswick. She says , as a child I loved going to see them but as a teenager I was more reluctant especially if I had a boyfriend with me as you never knew what they would do or say. They were both very proud of their stage careers and of their Equity Pensions. Aunt Evelyn in her seventies would still show you she could do the Can Can. As they got older they missed the stage and so decided they would spend the summer by the sea at Blackpool. Aunt Ethel (or Pearl as I always knew her) told fortunes to supplement their pensions and so enable them to stay the whole summer. Before I had a boyfriend she told me I would marry an engineer and go far away. I did later marry an engineer and within two weeks went to Zambia, so I had great faith in her predictions. In their later years they would, while at home, go to visit the Old People Center. This was not for the usual reasons but because Aunt Evelyn to quote "Felt sorry for the old dears" so they would go and entertain them with songs and tunes on the piano. They were both very lovable characters and I remember them with deep affection |
