George was orphaned before his 10th birthday. His Aunt Nellie married Arthur Cornes who acted as head of the family. He assisted George to start a career at the local Co-op and guaranteed his employment after the first world war. Arthur was a Manager at the Co-op at the time. George worked at the Co-op Butchers in Horwich End, Whaley Bridge in the late 1950's, which is how he is remembered to me. I also watched Manchester United win the 1968 European cup final at his home.
