1901 census 10 Lower Level, Fernilee, Derbyshire Emily Justina COOKE Head M 41 Female Sheffield, Yorkshire George was orphaned before his 10th birthday. His Aunt Nellie married Arthur Cornes who acted as head of the family. He assisted George to start a career at the local Co-op and guaranteed his employment after the first world war. Arthur was a Manager at the Co-op at the time. George worked at the Co-op Butchers in Horwich End, Whaley Bridge in the late 1950's, which is how he is remembered to me. I also watched Manchester United win the 1968 European cup final at his home. 1911 census Hockerley Lane, Whaley Bridge, Derbyshire 5 rooms Ellen Beatrice COOK Head 24 Female Single Cotton Weaver Whaley Bridge, Cheshire Form was signed by Arthur Dentith Cornes |
