William heap was born on April 12, 1852 at 128 Moss Lane in Hulme, Lancashire, England. He was christened on May 9, 1852 at St. George's Church in Hulme. His parents were Jonathan Heap (a brewer's agent and dry earth closet manufacturer) and Hannah Robinson. William attended Sandicroft College near Northwich for two years, and he also took a two year course in law. At age 22 he was a printer, bookbinder, and stationer. Two years later, William was the editor of a periodical called "Trade Unionist" which he started with Lloyd Jones (a socialist, union activist, and journalist). Then on February 12, 1875 William married Sarah Jane Hall Hanley (daughter of John Hanly and Emma Hall) at St. Paul's Parish Church in Dublin, Ireland. They had six children named Kathleen (Mrs. Paul Charles Frederic Rehyer), John Hanley, William Lionel, Cecil Robinson, Robert Reginald, and Muriel Vera (Mrs. John Brackett Lewis). For a short time the Heaps lived in Liverpool at 16 Nile street, while William was a brewer's agent, before they sailed off to Canada in 1884. On April 24th the family boarded the S.S. Sarina and arrived Quebec on May 6th. They lived in Owen Sound, Ontario for about two years while William established a dry earth closet factory and showroom at 57 Adelaide in Toronto. In 1886 Muskegon, Michigan men persuaded him to move his business to their city where it prospered for many years. In 1918, William's wife died in Muskegon. He then married Madeleine Perrollaz (Born on June 23, 1866 in Limoges, France) on November 16, 1920. They lived in France. Several years later he died at 18 Rue du Maréchal Foch in Vichy, France on July 26, 1929. The burial took place on August 13, 1929 at Cimetiere des Bartins. In 1995, his remains were removed and placed in the ossuary. |
