Note
|
According to family legend, Jack ran away from home to join the army at the start of World War 1, he was under-age and his mother was able to buy him out. He ran away again and she could not get him back this time. In the chaos of war he joined the Canadian forces and was repatriated to Canada but then worked his way south to New York. He worked in a large hotel in New York - grandpa said the Waldorf Astoria. He married a girl from England. Gordina's father had been a porter on Jesmond station, so she must have grown up near Newcastle upon Tyne. |
