Davene Loy Holliday was born on Aug. 12, 1923, in O’Neill, to David Nelson Loy and Lila Belle (Jones) Loy; she passed away on Jan. 8, 2015, in Seward at the age of 91. Following graduation in O’Neill, she attended summer school at Wayne State Teachers College for three years, teaching in rural schools in Holt County for four years. On May 24, 1945, she was united in marriage to Howard Burton Holliday, and to this union were born three children, Laura Jeane, Janelle Kay and Michael Howard. She and Howard lived most of their adult lives in Grand Island, where Davene worked as a full-time homemaker during the years her children were home. She then worked as a librarian for the Hall County Bookmobile and Seedling Mile School in Grand Island following those years. She was a Past President of the Liederkranz Society in Grand Island. After 50 years in Grand Island, she lived in Hastings, El Dorado, Kan., and Beatrice and finally settled in Seward. She loved sewing, needlework, crossword puzzles and bridge. She loved people and never met a stranger. She is survived by her daughters, Laura Jeane (Rodney) Hiser of Seward and Janelle Kay (Ronald) Weber of Hastings: five grandchildren, Jennifer (Lloyd) Tesch of Anchorage, Alaska, Nicholas (Jennifer) Hiser of Seward, Shelli (Darrin) Calhoun of Hastings, Dale Weber of Worland Wyo., and Benjamin Holliday of Oroville, Calif.; 11 great-grandchildren and two sisters. She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard; a son, Mike; her parents, and six siblings. Family graveside services will be at a later date |
