Note

As a child he injured his back helping his father fetch wood. Educated at Bowness Grammer school and apprenticed to a Watchmaker in 1866. Worked in firms in Liverpool and Manchester. Returned to Windermere and built a 3 storied house facing the lake. He also had a jewellery shop in Bowness. James married Rebecca Dobson in St Martin's Church 1876 and their only child was Annie born 1878.

They emigrated to Australia on the S.S. "Shimberazo" and then crossed to NZ. James bought land at Otahuhu and had a watchmaking and jewelley business. For some years he was Mayor. He took a great interest in the area, particularly in the preservation of the volcanic cones. He was an artist, drawing and painting, winning awards, the last being aged 82. Daughter Ann known as Annie, never married and lived at the family property on the main street until a new home was built for her in 1954. She died shortly afterwards.
