Note
|
Nannie Belle Bowerman was the name with which she was born. But, like her mother Veniter Matilda Mansell Bowerman, she didn't like her name. "Nannie" was an old family name. Those of honorable reputations held it, but Nannie Belle would not. Unlike her mother who changed her name to something unrelated to that given her, Maggie (not Mattie), Nannie Belle became Annabell. From her youth it was what she used. On her tombstone in the Sulphur, Oklahoma cemetery it reads Annabell. So, there are names and, then, there are names. The fun part is, Nannie and Veniter weren't the only ones who did it. "Maggie's husband told everyone he was a Junior, named for his father. Not so. Either folks misunderstood or he just told a tale. He was named for his mother's brother. James's father was Joseph. So, there are names and, then, there are names. |
