Alda Woodbury Spencer

1915-2014

Born in Utah, Alda Woodbury Spencer passed into the presence of God Aug. 27, 2014, in Pasadena, California at the age of 98. She is survived by daughters Joyce and Pat, five grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. Alda grew up in Riverside, graduated from nurses training at Good Samaritan Hospital in Los Angeles in 1940. She practiced nursing at Tim Aircraft during WWII, took time off to raise her family and returned to nursing to provide college educations for their children in 1965. She served as a Public Health nurse in the lower valley for the Riverside County Department of Public Health until her retirement in 1982. Married to James R. "Bob" Spencer in 1941, Alda and Bob settled in Indio in 1951 where they stayed for 52 years. Early members of Trinity Baptist Church, they helped Southwest Church begin in Palm Desert in 1973. Always seeking to serve the Lord, Alda started Desert Child Evangelism Fellowship in 1952, holding many Good News Clubs throughout the Valley. After her retirement she joined Bob in Gideon service in the jail and Juvenile Hall. We, the family, will miss Alda who so enjoyed listening to Dodger games and knitting while watching football, travels to China, Africa, SE Asia, and the Philippines, made the enchiladas we craved, told us about the time she fed worms to the neighbor boy when she lived in a tent as a child, watched and laughed at Looney Tunes with us, was named county Citizen of the Year for her volunteer work as a chaplain in the county jail and juvenile hall in Indio, hosted Gideons, international meetings in her home, and was friends with various Christian luminaries. A Remembrance Service will be held at Trinity Baptist Church, 44550 Monroe St., Indio at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 6, 2014.
