Vernal 3rd Ward Services Honor Lucille Calder. Funeral services for Mrs. Lucille Hacking Calder, 80, who died unexpedectedly Thursday of last week at her home, were held Monday at 11 a.m. in Vernal 3rd Ward Chapel under the direction of Bishop Samuel B. Woolley. In apparent good health, Mrs. Calder on the afternoon of her death, accompanied a singing group at Ashley Valley Jr. High School. She was later giving piano lessons in her home when she was apparently stricken with a heart attack and was found by a student. Connie Lee Dickson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lee Dickson. Mrs. Calder's life was one of service. In addition to raising eight children she had given of her time and musical talent whenever called upon. Active in LDS Church she was at the time of her death organist of the Vernal 3rd Ward, organist of the Uintah Stake Relief Society and chorister in the Ward Primary. In addition to the numerous positions she had held as chorister and organist, she had been YWMIA President and had served a stake mission with her husband from1953 to 1955. She was called upon frequently to play or sing at funerals and many public gatherings. She was a teacher and substitute teacher in the public schools for many years. Mrs. Calder was born in Vernal on May 3, 1890 to Joseph P. Hacking and Claire Stringham Hacking, early pioneers of the valley. She married Leo Calder on August 29, 1923 in the Salt Lake Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He preceded her in death by 3 months. Surviving are 4 sons and 4 daughters, Glen Calder of Provo, Don L. Calder, Mesa, Arizona; Fred Calder and Joseph Calder of Vernal; Mrs. Clayton (Lucy) Woolley, (twin), of Portland, Oregon; Mrs. Clinton (Rachel) Ashworth (twin) of San Jose, California; Mrs. Paul (Mary Alice) Diehl, Seatle, Washington; and Mrs. Duane (Carrie) Kerr of Salt Lake City; twenty four grandchildren also survive, as do 6 brothers and 3 sisters, Rulon Hcking, Don Hacking, Grant Hacking, Ferron Hacking, Junius Hacking and Leo Hacking, all of Vernal; Mrs. LaMar (Josephine) Bird of Los Angeles, California; Mrs. Fred N. (Mary Helen) Giles of Powell, Wyoming; and Mrs. Howard (Forence) Williams of Vernal. Services Prayer at the mortuary was offered by Ferron Hacking. Prelude and postlude music were played by Mrs. Don Walker "The opening song was "One Fleeting Hour," sung by Mrs. Bryce Erickson. Mrs. Max Stewart and Mrs. Dick Ufford. Other musical numbers included a duet by Mrs. Esther Faucett and Bennie Schmiett, "In That Far Away Land," an organ solo by Mrs. Arthur Schaefermeyer, "Abide With Me," and a duet by Mr. and Mrs. Glade Sowards, "Goin' Home." Speakers were Harmon S. Sowards and Archie Johnson. Prayers were offered by Leo Hacking and Grand Hacking. Pallbearers were Glen Calder, Don Calder, Joe Calder, Fred Calder, Duane Kerr and Paul Diehl. Burial was in the Vernal Memorial Park, under the direction of the Vernal Mortuary. The grave was dedicated by Duane Kerr. Visitors Coming from out of town for the services, in addition to members of the immediate family, were Mr. and Mrs. Earl Sumpsion of Springville; Miss Bea Stringham, Salt Lake City; Mr. and Mrs. Leon Green, Salt Lake City, Alene Calder, Provo; Mrs. Bird and Mrs. Giles. |
