Note

Dean Louis Howell, 83, passed away August 8, 2003, at Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center in Idaho Falls.
Dean was born January 24, 1920, in Basalt, Idaho, to Louis Preston and Joyce Elnora Sorensen Howell. He grew up in Basalt and Salt Lake City, graduating from Firth High School. He served his country in World War II, participating in the Battle of the Bulge, where he was captured. He was a prisoner of war in Germany, being liberated just days before the end of the war.

Following the war, he married Helen Hacking on January 7, 1948, in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple. They enjoyed fifty-four years of happiness together until her passing last year. They lived in Firth, Blackfoot, Mountain Home, Boise and Mud Lake, finally settling in Idaho Falls for the past forty-five years.

Dean and Helen are the parents of three children, Barry, Judy and Kelly.

Dean was a partner in Wilcox Construction Company, Fallsbrook, Falls Water Company, and Falls Valley Storage. He and Helen also owned and operated a clothing store and Finer Cleaners in Idaho Falls and Shelley.

Dean was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served in many capacities including dance director, stake missionary and as a bishop's counselor. He and his wife also served as part-time missionaries at the Idaho Falls Family History Center.

Dean worked hard, always paying close attention to detail. He did his very best at everything he ever did, never being satisfied with less than perfection. He was devoted to his wife and family, always concerned about their success and happiness. He especially loved his association with his grandchildren. He enjoyed photography, reading, driving and working in his garage.

Dean is survived by his step-mother, Thelma Howell of Blackfoot; sister, Donna (Don) Johnson of Salt Lake City; brothers, Boyd (Loretta) Howell and Jerry (Caroline) Howell of Basalt; daughter, Judy (Tony) Anderson; son, Kelly (Cindy) Howell of Idaho Falls; grandchildren, Shawn (Jennifer) Anderson of El Mirage, Arizona, Lori (Vance) Sullivan, Justin Howell, and Amy Howell of Idaho Falls; and great-granddaughters, Darian Elsner and Jaiden Anderson of El Mirage. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Helen; son, Barry Dean Howell; grandson, Scott Barry Anderson; sister, Afton Chase; and brothers, Ted Howell and Bob Howell.

Funeral services will be at noon Monday, August 11, at the Idaho Falls Central LDS Stake Center, 2025 Jennie Lee Drive in Idaho Falls, with Bishop Nathan Smith officiating. The family will greet friends from 6 p.m. 8 p.m. Sunday, August 10, at Coltrin Mortuary, 2100 First Street in Idaho Falls, and one hour Monday prior to services at the church. Interment will be at the Basalt Cemetery.
