Dr. Briggs dies of accident injuries--Dr. Leland S. Briggs, 51, Provo cardiologist, died Friday, Jan. 11, of injuries received in a Dec. 28 auto accident that claimed his wife and two sons. A Utah Highwaay Patrol dispatcher said Dr. Briggs died at Utah Valley Regional Medical Center Friday at 10:50 p.m.

The accident occurred on Highway 6 about 13 miles east of the Billie's Mountain Cut in Spanish Fork Canyon when Dr. Brigg's vehicle and a semi-truck crashed on the icy highway. Dr. Brigg's wife, Mary, 49, and their two sons, Jason, 18, and Shawn, 13, were killed in the early morning collision. Kris Jorgenson, 19, Provo, a family friend and a passenger in the Briggs vehicle, was hospitalized at the Provo hospital following the accident.

Neither Stanley Oldroyd, Glenwood, Sevier Co., driver of the semi-truck nor a passenger in his vehicle, Bob Ray Young, were injured. Utah Highway Patrol Trooper Lynn Richardson, investigating officer, said Dr. Briggs was driving eastbound on SR 6 at 5:44 a.m. when his vehicle apparently slid on the icy roadway into the path of the semi.

Dr. Leland Stanford Briggs, 51, Provo, died Friday, Jan. 11, 1985 at Utah Valley Regional Medical Center of causes related to an automobile accident in Spanish Forrk Canyon on Dec. 28, 1984. He was born April 23, 1933 at Lehi, to L. Stanforrd Briggs and Faye Anderson Briggs. He married Mary Woolston Sept. 9, 1955 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. She died December 28, 1984.

Leland lived his early life in American Fork and graduated from high school there. He attended BYU for three years and then graduated from the University of Utah. 1958 he received his M.D. degree from the University of Utah. In 1966 he entered private practice in a multi-specialty clinic in Boulder, Colorado. In August of 1970 he joined the Central Utah Medical Clinic in Provo. He was certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine.

Leland was a past president of the UVRMC Medical Staff, and was past president and current member of the UVRMC Board of Trustees. He was instrumental in designing the Intensive Care Unit in the new wiing of UVRMC. He was active in improving the quality of patient care. He was past president of the Utah Heart Association. He was a clinical instructor at the University of Utah Medical School Cardiology Department an Adjunct at the BYU College of Nursing. He was past president of the Internal Medicine Department at UVRMC and chaired most major committees over the years. He was one of the most well-respected physicians in the area by colleagues and patients alike.

He was an active member of the LDS Church and was a high priest in the Oak Hills 5th Ward. He was serving as Stake Sunday School President. He had served in the High Council in the BYU 8th Stake, and was a past bishop of the BYU 85th Ward. He had served in all auxiliaries of the LDS Church.

Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. David (Lezlie) Wickes, Salt Lake City; Mrs. Kyle (Michelle) Golightly, Proovo; Mrs. Gordon (Rebecca) Hofheines, Provo; three grandchildren; and his mother, and Mrs. Faye Briggs, American Fork. He was preceded in death by his father, L. Sanford Briggs, American Fork, his wife, Mary Woolston Briggs, and two sons, Jason S. Briggs and Shawn S. Briggs.

Services will be held at noon Wednesday [January 16, 1985] at the LDS Oakhills Chapel, 1900 N. 1500 E., Provo, Friday, 6-8 p.m. Burial will be in the American Fork City Cemetery.
