Deceased Name: Obituary: A. Ralph Smith 1913 ~ 2003 He was born May 27, 1913 to Ray Garfield Smith and Luella Tuckett on the Provo Bench (Orem). Ralph moved to American Fork at 15. He graduated in May 1932 from American Fork High School where he played on the football and track team and was given the All-Around Athletic Award his junior year. He played basketball on the F.F.A. team that took state. He later attended BYU. He married Mabel Cook Smith on September 15, 1937 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. They have seven children, 24 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren. Ralph and Mabel made their first home in Mercur, Utah. Later they made their permanent home in American Fork. Ralph's brother and sisters: Meryl Burbidge (deceased), Merrett Smith Los Angeles; Glee Lott, American Fork. Ralph owned and operated one of the largest construction companies in Utah and worked on many projects during 1940's -1960's. Ralph's company constructed overpasses, highways, bridges, and other major construction projects in the Western United States. Some of his work includes: several of the I-15 and I-80 overpasses, Bridge and Fish Ladders on the Columbia River, Bridge over the Virgin River between St. George and Mesquite, road work for the "Strip" in Las Vegas, road to Bull Frog, Eagle Canyon build over I-70 and the Cartcreek Bridge at Flaming Gorge. Ralph also worked for the American Fork City as the Street Superintendent until he retired. Ralph was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He held various church callings and was a very faithful home teacher. Ralph was an example to his family of integrity, service, humor and hard work. Children are Cleo (deceased), Laraine Burrows, Sandy; Barbara (Gerald deceased) Anderson, Morgan; Kenneth Smith, American Fork; Marilyn (Moyle) Greenwood, American Fork; Arlene (John) Heiner, American Fork; Blaine (Jaime) Smith. Draper. Funeral services will be Saturday, September 13 at 11:00 a.m. in the American Fork 29th Ward, 680 East 300 North. Friends may call at Anderson & Sons Mortuary, 49 East 100 North, American Fork, Friday 6 to 8 p.m. and Saturday at the church 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. prior to services. Burial, American Fork Cemetery. The Smith family would like to thank the many employees of the Regent Assisted Living Center and Applegate Hospice for their compassionate care and love for their father. |
