J. N. June Merkley, age 87, passed away of natural causes on Tuesday, Oct. 4, 2011. He was born March 7, 1924 in Vernal to Morgan and Irma Carpenter Merkley. He was the fourth of seven children, brought up on the family ranch in Dry Fork Canyon and attended school at Maeser Elementary and Uintah High School. June served in the U.S. Army during World War II. On March 28, 1950, June married his sweetheart and lifelong companion of 61 years, LaNae Workman. June and LaNae had a successful farm and ranch in Dry Fork and were owners of Dun Broke Seed & Feed in Maeser. June was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day-Saints and worked with the Boy Scouts of Maeser 2nd Ward. He was also member and served as an officer with Uintah Cattleman's Association, and a member of the Young Farmer's Association. He was on the rodeo committee in the 1950's and 1960's and helped with the Junior Livestock. In 2001, June and LaNae were the Dinosaur Roundup Rodeo Grand Marshals. After selling their ranch and business, June and LaNae spent two winters in Phoenix, Ariz. working for Tom Bane Feed. Then they returned to Vernal and spent many years cowboying on the mountains around Vernal for numerous livestock ranchers. June loved his family and friends, especially his grandsons and great-grandchildren and loved to tease and BS everyone. June is survived by his wife; LaNae, daughter JuNae (Creg) Cook of Dry Fork, grandsons; Lex Cook of Burleson, Texas, Rory (Melanie) Cook, and Brandon (Tamera) Cook, all of Vernal, 12 Great-grandchildren, brother; George D. (Charlene) Merkley of Vernal, sisters; Sybil Bohn of Salt Lake City, Utah, Veda Parkin and Velda Hansen of Nephi, Utah and Phebe Jane Hall of Vernal. He is preceded in death by his parents; Morgan and Irma Merkley, brother; Glindon Merkley, and sister; Clella Merkley. Funeral services were held Friday, Oct. 7 at 11 a.m. at the Maeser Stake Center. Burial was in the Maeser Fairview Cemetery with Military Honors by the American Legion Post 11 and 124, and the Utah Army National Guard, and under the direction and care of the Blackburn Vernal Mortuary. The family would like to express their heartfelt love and thanks to the Hospice Aides of Good Shepherd and especially June's Hospice Nurse Ashley Russell. Vernal Express |
