Obituary at the Vernal Public Library. He died at the Ashley Valley Medical Center. He was a rancher and business man. President of the Ravin Oil Company and a director of the Uintah State Bank and also a director for Uintah Company Hospital and was with the Uintah Water Conservation for over 20 years. He filled two missions to the Indians, 1951-1955 for the Mormon Church. In the Vernal Public Library is a copy of an oral interview with Morgan Merkley and his wife. Among the experiences they related are the following; One year they ran out of hay and traded a cow for a ton of hay to help feed their cattle. To help make this hay last; "...went to the river bank and cut down big cottonwood trees so that when they fell over into the meadow the cows and sheep could nibble on those little top greens. We saved our herds that way, sheep and cattle both one year. But oh, he cut down an awful lot of trees." (Mrs Katharine Merkley) When asked about the flue epidemic of 1918, Morgan's wife, Katharine, a funeral that was held outside on the lawn. She said masks were made for everyone to wear and that eucalyptus drops were put on them to act as a disinfectant. Morga Merkley remembered an, "old man around here who wore his mask and he cut a hole in it so he could smoke his pipe." Information on this family also comes from the personal records of their son, George "D" Merkley of Vernal, Utah. |
