Isabelle M. Lewis, a prominent leader and businesswoman in Price, owner and operator of Lewis Jewelry Co. Inc., died April 12, 1981 at home after a brief illness. She was born in Vernal, the oldest child of George Albert Merkley and Georgiana Blackburn on April 12, 1907. She is survived by 9 brothers and sisters, Eva Knight, Edna White, Davis, Amos and Warren Merkley, Flora Singleton and Marie Voyles all of Vernal, Kate Jewkes, Price, and Woodrow Merkley, Helper. Five step children, Blanche Heberling, California, Joanne Erksine and Fae Maughan, Denver, Colorado and Don C. Lewis, Tooele and Richard F. Lewis, Price. Isabell came to Price in 1930 and started working in the jewelry business in 1931. She married Dr. W.W. Lewis 22 August 1938 in Glenwood Springs, Colorado. He died May 7, 1977. Isabell was a prominent member of the community and as such participated actively in the Business and Professional Women’s association and the Soroptomist Club, holding all the leadership positions at various times in these organizations. She was an active member of the Lady Elks Lodge and Credit Women’s International. She had received the Business Woman of the Year Award. She also participated actively in the Chamber of Commerce and the Retail Merchants Association and took an active part in most community drives. |
