Most Impressive Funeral Services For Mrs. Mitchell. Crowds from All Crowds From All Reservation Towns Attend Funeral Held At Maeser, The Young Mother's Girlhood Home. Internment Made at Hayden. Profound sorrow was expressed in the community Thursday, May 21, when it was announced that Mrs. Fern Hacking Mitchell, wife of Sheriff Arzy H. Mitchell of Duchesne County, had died at 12:30 p.m. at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. James Hacking. Sunday at 11 o'clock the funeral of Fern Hacking Mitchell, wife of Sheriff Arzy H. Mitchell of Duchesne County, was held at the Maeser Ward Chapel with Bishop Sylvanus Collett presiding. Every available place in the chapel was occupied and many were standing on the outside, who had come to pay their respects to the dead, the bereaved husband , the brothers and sisters and the aged pioneer parents. Nearly every reservation town was represented. Fern Hacking Mitchell was born in Vernal, August 28, 1895 and is the daughter of James Hacking and Annie M. Glines Hacking, pioneers of the Ashley Valley. She was educated at the Vernal Central and the former Uintah Academy and as a girl was active in the church organizations of Maeser. On September 17, 1913 the deceased was married to Arzy H. Mitchell and moved to Hayden, where they lived until Mr. Mitchell was elected sheriff of Duchesne County, when they moved to Duchesne. To them were born six children: Thelma, who died when four years old; Truman, 10; Howard, 8; Wayne, 5; Elfreda, 3; Lorin, 1. She is survived by her parents and the following brothers and sisters: James C., Lapoint; John . Gusher; Cora Mitchell, Neola; Zina Ashby, Nellie Colton, May Calder and Owen, all of Vernal; Elizabeth J. Colton, Ralph, Ray and Lizzie Hacking preceded her in death. Four years ago Mrs. Mitchell contracted the flu which weakened her heart and her health has gradually failed since. On April 28 she was brought to the home of her parents to be near medical aid and prepare for a necessary operation. On Monday the operation, not serious in its nature, was performed and she rallied in fine shape and was to all appearances getting well rapidly. On Wednesday a change for the worse came and a complete collapse of the heart from some unknown cause, caused her death at 12:30 on Thursday, May 21. The deceased was an affectionate wife and mother and always willing to help others, often going beyond her strength. Her love for her children was shown during the recent illness and the very serious operation upon her little daughter, when she refused to leave the bedside and never doubted when medical skill was discouraged. She has always been active in church work, serving as president of the young ladies organization at Hayden at the same time Mr. Mitchell was president of the young men's organization. The respect which the people hold for Mr. and Mrs. Mitchell is shown by the large attendance at the funeral. Nearaly one-half of the citizens of Duchesne were in attendance and many from the other reservation towns. At Hayden where interment was made a large crowd of neighbors had gathered at the graveside and special services were held by Bishop Dan M. Mitchell of Hayden, a brother to Arzy. The grave was dedicated by Ira Pace of Hayden. About 20 cars accompanied the remains from Vernal besides those from reservation sections. Very Impressive funeral services were held at Maeser. Bishop Sylvanus Collett presiding. The singing was furnished by a chorus under the direction of Mrs. Lucille Calder. The opening prayer was by Robert Bodily and the benediction by Thomas Bingham. The speakers were Victor G. Billings of Duchesne and counselor in the Duchesne Stake Presidency, Arrorney Ray E. Dillman of Roosevelt, President Wallace Calder of Uintah Stake and R.S. Collett of Salt Lake City, who spoke words of consolation to the bereaved. Flowers in profusion were given in tribute to the dead, some from the Duchesne County officers. Immediately after the services the remains were taken to Hayden for interment to be by the side of her daughter. Vernal Express, May 29, 1925 |
