Note

Nellie Hacking and Charles H. Colton FamilyWhile reading through the 1954 “Hacking Bulletin” I noticed that there was little said about some of the children of John Sampson and Jane Clark Hacking. I should like to pay tribute to my own parents by telling a little more about their lives. James Hacking, the oldest son, and his wife Annie Mariah Glines Hacking were both born in Utah County, he in Cedar Fort the 23rd of December 1856 and she in American Fork 11 May 1858, but both were reared in Cedar Fort where they were schooled in the early day experiences of the West and the L D S Church. They were active in their ward and stake until October 1879 when they with their two small children James Clair and Elizabeth and other Cedar Fort people moved to Ashley Valley which was being settled at that time. There for the rest of their lives they were both active in church, civic and educational organizations and projects. Their spacious home and big orchard were one of the few social centers for young and old alike during the early days of the valley. The famous words said about Abou Ben Adhem could be equally said about “Uncle Jim and Aunt Ann,” for they truly “loved their fellow men.”I, Nellie Hacking, the sixth child, married Charles Henry Colton in the Salt Lake Temple 28 June 1906, and have reared four sons and five daughters. “Charley” and I have had many opportunities for serving the church and communities wherever we have lived. He spent 40 years as a teacher in the schools of Utah. Since retirement he has been an employee in the hotel business in Salt Lake City, and he is an ordained ordinance worker in the Salt Lake Temple. He works in the North 18th Ward of Ensign Stake as a District Ward Teacher and sings in their choir. I am doing what genealogical research I can and help in the ward Relief Society work department; also do temple ordinance work. We supervise the North and South 18th Ward cottage and grounds which serve as an appendage to the chapel as a classroom and recreational center.[News also given about their 9 children: Charles Ray, Miriam, Anthon, Lawrence, Lorna, Bernice, Reed, Ardis, and Edna (see their stories on their page).]
