Nellie Hacking Colton Birth: Feb. 26, 1886 Funeral services were held on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. in Salt Lake City for Mrs. Nellie Hacking Colton, 81, who died in the Central Utah Convalescent center, Orem, May 3, following a prolonged illness to her age. Mrs. Colton was born February 26, 1886 in Vernal, the sixth child of James and Annie M. Glines Hacking, early pioneers of Ashley Valley. She attended elementary school and the Uintah Stake Academy in Vernal. On June 28, 1906, she married Charles Henry Colton in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Mrs. Colton was active in the LDS Church, serving for many years in various organizations as teacher, organist and chorister. She also served in presidencies of the Primary and YMMIA. She and her husband made their home in the Uintah Basin until 1942 at which time they moved to Salt Lake City. There she became a dedicated genealogist, working until her illness. For the past year she has lived in Orem at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Wesley Rawlins. She was preceded in death by her husband and son, Reed Colton. Survivors include three sons and five daughters, Ray C. Colton, Salt Lake City; Mrs. Rolland (Miriam) Perry, Hinsdale, Illinois; Anthon H. Colton, Bountiful; Lawrence J. Colton, Kamas; Mrs. Elmer C. (Lorna) Cox, Wausau, Wisconsin; Mrs. Frank P. (Ardis) Linford, Provo; Mrs. John P. (Edna) Sargent, Sikeston, Missouri; 29 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren; one brother, Owen Hacking, Vernal; two sisters, Mrs. Wallace (May) Calder, Vernal; and Mrs. Mervin (Cora) Mitchell, Midvale. Bishop George W. Jenkins of Vineyard Ward, Orem Stake, conducted the funeral services. Prelude and postlude music was played by Dianne Perry Kapp. Family prayer prior to services was given by Roy C. Colton, a son. Kent W. Colton, grandson, gave the invocation. Kathleen Perry, a granddaughter, sang "The Morning Breaks, The Shadows Flee," David O. McKay III, bishop of Salt Lake East 18th Ward, and Jesse A. Haws of Vernal were the speakers. Mrs. Kapp and Marilyn Rawling, granddaughters, played an organ and piano duet, "Oh My Father." A quartet consisting of Craig and Sharon Colton and David and Francis Perry sang "That Wonderful Mother of Mine." accompanied by Mrs. Kapp. Gary Colton, grandson, gave the benediction. Six grandsons were pallbearers. Terry Cox, grandson, dedicated the grave. She married Charles Henry Colton in the Salt Lake Temple 28 June 1906, and reared four sons and five daughters. Her husband spent 40 years as a teacher in the schools of Utah. After he retired, he was an employee in the hotel business in Salt Lake City. She did what genealogical research she could and helped in the ward Relief Society work department. They both did temple ordinance work. They both supervised the North and South 18th Ward cottage and grounds which serve as an appendage to the chapel as a classroom and recreational center.
