After their second child, they moved to Preston, Lancashire, England , where they heard the gospel and were converted, being baptized in 1839 . They sacrificed much so they might come to the Valley. They left England in 1850 , lived in St. Louis for five and a half years to earn enough money for the journey west. While there their oldest son John died of cholera, and their daughter Jane , married. They arrived in the valley in 1856 and continued on and settled in Cedar Fort, Utah . James was called to help build the Salt Lake Temple, working without pay. He died before the temple was completed and was buried in Cedar Fort, Utah .
