He served in the Pacific during WWII, and wrote encouraging letters to his sister Mary. His funeral included honors from the American Legion, and the hymn "When the Saints go Marching In" (his only request).

His obituary appeared in the Lapeer County Press on August 7 and 10, 2011.

"JOHN B. SHEPHERD, 91, of Lapeer, died Wednesday, August 3, 2011. John was born August 31, 1919, in Canada, son to Thomas and Annie (Barrow) Shepherd. He married Leona Wadsworth, on June 26, 1940, in Lapeer.

Mr. Shepherd proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He worked over 40 years for General Motors Truck and Bus, retiring in 1983. John also did floor sanding and refinishing for many people in the Lapeer area. Mr. Shepherd was a member of Grace Episcopal Church in Lapeer, since 1922. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion Post #16, where is served on the Honor Guard, was Post Commander and building manager. John coached American Legion Baseball for 7 years, and played softball and basketball when he was younger. He especially enjoyed bowling and dancing.

Mr. Shepherd is survived by his daughter, Julie (Bradley Jacokes) Shepherd-Jacokes of Williamston, Michigan; son-in-law, John R. Thurlow of Lapeer; daughter-in-law, Suzanne Shepherd of Lapeer; special friend, Sandy Chapman; grandchildren, John, LeeAnna, Jeanette, Bonnie, Meghan and Michelle; great-grandchildren, Diana, Jennifer, Heidi, Christopher, Ben, DeLany, John S., Jessica, Miranda, Lee, Andrea and Emilee; and great great grandchildren, Samantha, Ashley, Faith, Grace and Owen.

John was preceded in death by his wife, Leona Shepherd; daughter, Susanne Thurlow; son, John T. Shepherd; parents, Thomas and Annie Shepherd; sister, Mary Laughlin; and brother, Ted Shepherd.

Memorial contributions may be made to Grace Episcopal Church in Lapeer or St. Jude Children’s Hospital.

A funeral service was held Saturday, August 6, 2011 at Grace Episcopal Church in Lapeer, The Rev. Sarah Parks officiated. Burial was in Mt. Hope Cemetery Lapeer, with military honors under the auspices of American Legion Post #16 Honor Guard.
