  Robert Townson of Raven Bank, Staveley died July 23rd 1873 and was buried at Crosthwaite Church on 26th July 1873. There are memorials to him, to his son Thomas who was buried 2nd May1863, to his daughter Elizabeth who died at Raven Bank on 15th November1876 and to his wife Mary who died at Raven Bank on 18th November 1876. The Westmorland Gazette of 26th July 1873 mentions that Robert Townson was one of the last surviving officers of the old Westmorland Militia.  Robert Townson's Will and probate papers are in the Cumbria Record office at kendal. He left an annuity of £50 to his unmarried daughter Elizabeth for life and the remaainder of his estate to his wife for life or until remarriage. It was then to be divided equally between his sons John, Robert and William. The estate was sworn in at under £3000. Mary Townson and her daughter had small personal estates, which were divided between John, Robert and William Townson.
