TO FAR OFF INDIA

Miss Gail Tallman Has Gone as a Missionary

Saturday there left our little city one who will take with her in her journey the prayers of all good people. We refer to Miss Gail Tallman, daughter of our friends Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Tallman of Seeley township. Miss Tallman's objective point is far away India, where she goes as a Missionary and physician. Miss Tallman graduated, as we understand it, from the Guthrie County High School at Panora some years ago. She laid out her life work and with characteristic energy and indomitable will began her studies and fitting herself for that work. For nine years she has been a splendid student and worker, and only recently did she consider herself fitted for the life duties she has imposed upon herself. And just here we wish to say no one has left our shores better fitted for such work than does Dr. Gail Tallman. She is far above the average young lady in native ability and education. She is a finished lady in every sense and goes to her work not only well equipped, but with her heart and mind fixed upon the work of lifting poor heathen India up to a higher plane of living, and into the Christian family of nations. THE TIMES joins with all Dr. Tallman's friends here in bidding her Godspeed in her noble and consecrated life work.

It might be interesting to Dr. Tallman's friends as well as to TIMES readers generally to have some idea of her itinerary. Leaving Guthrie Center Saturday she went to Des Moines where she stopped over Sunday and where she was entertained by Drake University, her "alma mater", and the ladies of University Place Christian church. The latter, under whose care and keeping she goes to India, gave her a farewell reception. Sunday evening with other friends she left Des Moines on a special train for Louisville, Kentucky, where the National Convention of the Christian church is being held. Dr. Tallman gave a short address before the Convention on the 15th. With three other ladies who are also going to India, Miss Myrtle Turman of Gowrie, Iowa, Miss Anna Cowdrey of Ft. Madison, Iowa, and Miss Olive Vaughn Griffith of Pawee, Neb., Miss Griffith has already been in India and is returning. The party will leave Louisville in time to sail on the Kaiser Wilhelm, which leaves New York on the 22nd of October. They will sail direct for England, reaching London October 28th. Here they leave the ship and spend several days in England, three in London, one day at Oxford University, one day in each Dover, Calais, and Lousanne, and three days in Paris, one day each in Rome and Naples. At Naples they will again embark. This time on the Kliest, a smaller steamship than the Kaiser Willhelm, which is 706 1/2 feet long with a tonage of 19,500 tons. They expect to reach Bombay, India December 1st. They will go to Lucknow to attend the Union Language school, where they will remain six months, then go to the hills for three months during the extreme hot weather. After this they will be assigned by the India Board of Missionaries to their respective stations.

Dr. Tallman will be gone seven years before returning. She has surely chosen a good part. A few days before she left home her friends and neighbors gave her a farewell reception at her home in Seely township, about seventy-five being present. We can only close this article by saying to Miss Tallman, "God be with you till we meet again", in which sentiment all Christian people will join us.

Note from contributor Lois De Voss: There was no documentation with this newspaper article out of the Guthrie Center, Iowa newspaper. Another article says that Rebecca Gail Tallman went to northern India in 1912. Assuming this is when the article was printed - possibly around the 10th to the 12th of October 1912.
