Note

Thomas Ratcliffe Addison

Thomas Ratcliffe Addison was the grandson of Joseph Addison and Margaret Townley.

Joseph's first marriage was to Elizabeth Harper with whom he had two daughters Elizabeth and Mary.

Mary Addison was born 1841 at Bridgend Farm, Stainton, Westmorland. Her granddaughter was Ethel Howell (1902-2005) who lived with her grandparents for a short time from the age of seven. Ethel's memory was sharp and luckily everything was recorded. The following is from when Ethel was remembering those times:

"Tom Addison was a missionary in India. I was so excited one day when he came to see us. It was a great thrill when they came home for a holiday. He was a great big chap, full of tales of his travels and adventures. He told us his house in India had to be surrounded by tall thorn bushes to keep out tigers and wild animals. Tom married a lady doctor out there and they adopted a baby girl. She must have been a really good doctor. She told us once that she had tended to a woman who had been badly burned by falling on the fire. She had been wearing a bracelet around her arm, a really thick good one of unpolished silver. Before her arm could be treated the bracelet had to be cracked off her arm. Afterwards the woman took the broken bracelet and gave it to Tom's wife out of gratitude."

All of this is a direct quote from Ethel's memoirs.
