HUNTINGDON, BEDFORD & PETERBOROUGH GAZETTE Sat 21 Sep 1833: DREADFUL ACCIDENT – Wisbech, Sep 18 – On Saturday evening last, as the son of a porter named Retchless, aged about eight years old, was amusing himself in a lighter on the river, he attempted to pull the mast, which had fallen overboard: he raised the smaller end and the mast slipping, knocked him into the river, and he was drowned. The body has not yet been found. [refers to Samuel – a couple of issues later inquest: Accidental Drowning] Wisbech 26 Feb 1834 This evening a poor man, whose name is Retchless, known as the porter to the Peterborough packet-boat, was at the foot of the bridge, by some accident he fell to the ground just as a loaded wagon was passing, one of the wheels of which went over his head, and literally crushed it to pieces, when he was lifted from the ground part of his head fell away. In the summer we gave an account of a poor boy, the son of the same man, who fell overboard from a lighter in the river and was drowned, and after several days, was discovered by his father near the place where he fell in. Copied from the Cambridge, Wisbech, March, Ely, Chatteris, Manea, Upwell, Thorney, Whittlesea, Newmarket, Soham, Linton and Royston Advertiser. |
