Note
|
The will of Martha Smith, proved 14 April 1812, Derby. (This is Martha, the unmarried daughter of Thomas Smith of the Hayes. Martha died on 5 Nov 1811.) The will names the following: Sister Susannah Woolley The sons of my brother Edward deceased: Thos, William, Christ., Edward, Samuel Sons and daughters of my brother John deceased: Joseph, John and Mary Shaw Sons and daughters of sister Ann Boden deceased: Thos, John, Richard, William, Sarah Boden. This is all very interesting, as it proves some things which I was not completely sure of: (1) Thomas Smith's eldest son by the second marriage, Thomas (b 1744) was still alive in 1811 (or thereabouts - I don't have a date for the writing of the will). (Thomas and his wife Catherine Holland lived in Huntingdonshire.) (2) The sequencing of her brother Edward's children, placing Edward after Christopher, shows that my theory that Edward baptised 1782 probably died in infancy is correct. The surviving Edward would have been born about 1786 and this fits the census ages. Moreover, Edward's brother William (b 1780), who could have been the unnamed buried child in 1783, clearly isn't, as he is still living about 1811. (3) Susannah Boden (b abt 1779), who I had as a daughter of Ann Smith and John Boden, is not named by Martha so presumably isn't their daughter after all. I can't work out who she is! (4) John Smith, son of Thomas of the Hayes, obviously married and had children. The last I knew of him was witnessing his sister Susannah's marriage (to William Shaw Woolley) in 1776. I can't find the marriage or his children's baptisms, yet. I assume he died before 1784 as he didn't feature in Thomas' will - but then, nor did Thomas junior, and he was clearly alive then. |
