Captain, 1 Jan. 1818 ; Major, 14 June 1825 ; Lieut.-Colonel, 9 May 1830 ;
Colonel, 23 June 1842 ; Major-General, 20 June 1854.

India Records say his infant son died 29/6/1824 and this could not have been infant Samuel who died in 1822 and was buried August 1822 at Patna.

Samuel senior died of gout and brain disease in 1866.

" This is the last will and testament Of me Samuel swinhoe Of Cheltenham a
lieutenant in the East India Service Bengal establishment / i give devise
and bequeath all my real and personal estate and property whatsoever and
wheresoever at the time Of my decease to my beloved wife Emily Swinhoe to
hold the same unto her my said wife her heirs executors administrators and assigns according to the nature there Of respectively for her own absolute use and benefit / i hereby revoke all former wills and Of this my last will and testament i nominate andappoint my said wife Emily Swinhoe my sole executrix / in witness whereof i the said Samuel Swinhoe have hereto set my hand this fifth day Of August in the year Of our lord one thousand eight hundred and fifty eight - S. Swinhoe -
signed and declared by the testator Samuel Swinhoe as and for his last
will and testament in the presence Of us present at the same time who at
his request in his presence and in the presence Of each other have hereto
subscribed our names

  proved at Gloucester the 6th day Of July 1866 by the oath Of Emily Swinhoe widow the relict the sole executor to whom administration was granted. the testator Samuel Swinhoe was late Of Cheltenham in the county Of Gloucester esquire a general on the retired list Of her majesty's Indian Army Bengal establishment, and died on the18th day Of June 1866 at Cheltenham aforesaid.
