The family was from the Newcastle area - which of course is not far from the tiny village of Swinhoe nor from Rock Hall. Henry was articled in Dec. 1773 to Christoper Wolbank, Hatton Street, London. Attorney at Common Plea, London, Oct. 1775. Emigrated to India in 1778 on ' The Calcutta .' Then Attorney, Supreme Court, Fort William, Bengal, Jan. 1779. He was left £50 from his father's estate. He himself died intestate. Tombstone Inscription. "Here lieth the body of Henry Swinhoe, Esq., Attorney At Law, who departed this life on the 27th Oct. 1808, aged 56 years and 3 months. He ever proved himself a virtuous man, a tender husband, and a most indulgent father. This Monument is erected to his Memory, by his afflicted wife, Jane Swinhoe. Also of Mrs. Jane Swinhoe, relic of Henry Swinhoe, who departed this life 22nd Feb. 1835, aged 77 years and 4 months." |
