Dr. Norman Ware McNabb

Born Feb. 15, 1924 to Charles and Eula on the "poor farm" in West Central Arkansas near the town called Greenwood, Norman Ware McNabb lived an extraordinary life. He died May 27, 2009 in Atlanta. His family was "dirt" poor; and Norman was the ninth of ten children. The story goes that during the great depression, the family ate cornbread and molasses three times a day. He attended grammar school in Greenwood and loved football very much. The family moved to Norman in1938 with all they owned in the back of a pick-up truck. He graduated from Norman High School in 1942, and in 1943 he joined the 4th Marine Division. After training at Camp Pendleton in San Diego, CA, he deployed to the Marshall Islands, Saipan, and Iwo Jima. After serving in the Marines for 34 months, he was discharged in 1945.In January 1946, Norman enrolled at the University of Oklahoma on a football scholarship. At OU he was a four-year letterman; played in five major bowl games; and served as co-captain of the 1950 Sooner National Championship team. He married Betty Sue in 1947 and after graduation in 1950 started a sporting goods store out of their apartment. In 1951, he opened his first "real store" and in 1955 another one in Midwest City. He and Betty Sue have four children, 10 grandchildren, and one great grandchild. Norman began part-time teaching at Norman High School and later served as Freshman Coach at OU from 1952 until 1962.Norman sold his store in 1965 and enrolled in night school. He received his EdD from OU in1972 (his third degree from OU). He then served as President of the Carl Albert Junior College from 1973 - 1974 and administrative officer and Professor of Education at the University of Texas at Dallas from 1974 - 1982, when he retired (for the first time). In 1982 he and Betty Sue moved to Tulsa and Norman worked as Marketing Manager for the Noble Drilling Company, retiring the second time in 1990. In 2003, Norman moved to Atlanta, GA to be near his eldest son.The family will received visitors Friday at H.M. Patterson and Son, 1020 Spring St. NW, Atlanta, GA. Funeral Mass will be offered at 3:30 p.m. May 30 at the Catholic Cathedral of Christ the King, 2699 Peachtree Road NE, Atlanta.
