He attended the Billings schools and the University of Oklahoma. With his marriage in 1927 and birth of his children in 1928 and 1930, Gordon became associated with his father, William, in the grain business in Billings and the name of the firm was changed to William Hayton & Son. In 1945, upon the death of his father, Gordon became sole owner of the business and continued as such until his death in 1967.
