Willian Hayton - born at Lakethewaite Farm, Firbank township, Westmorland, England, and came to the United States in 1895, at the age of 26, from his home, Crake Hall, New Hutton, England.

In his diary, dated Saturday, June 15, 1895, he recorded his departure from Liverpool. The journey took six days before the 770 passengers arrived on June 21 in New York in an evening fog. He described the scene as, "a splendid sight!
All the electric lights are lighted,, and it is a picture never to be forgotten for miles up either side of the coast. It is nothing else, but a mass of lights, all colours.

In 1901 in Crosthwaite, England, married Mary Ann "Mayme" Pearson daughter of Thomas Pearson and Margaret Harker.
