It was Auld Aunt Aggie that came to the rescue of the disgraced Agnes Pearson. At the age of 81she offered to take on the baby at her new place of residence, Hill Cottage. on the one condition she would be called Agnes. This condition was met and the baby was made her heir. It allowed an arrangement to be made with a local lad William Bownas who, it is rumoured within the family, was paid a sum of money to marry Agnes Pearson on August 8th 1874. What Agnes Pearson was doing at this time has never been made clear She may have been in service or have been working in Kendal but her baby was born at the Lound in Kendal There must be a Will of Agnes Pearson but as yet I have not seen it. It may be amongst the papers of Hill Cottage Buried at Crosthwaite May 24th 1876 Agnes Pearson spinster of Hill Cottage, Hubbersty Head at 85 After only 5 years at the Cottage she died and the future of the young Agnes Pearson at the age of 5 was in doubt again. By this time her biological mother was married and had had her first child Bertha, of the marriage with William Bownas while they were living at Hubbersty Head, presumably the Farm. They were now expecting their second child Edith which was born at Ghyll Head Farm, Hubbersty Head in March 1876
census 1871 Over Staveley census 1881 Barley Bridge Mill Jane Agnes Pearson 10 with her mother and stepfather Kendal From a letter dated July 1996 from Nora When Becca Wood (daughter of Aunt Mary Jane Wood nee Hoggarth) later Inman left Crosthwaite School aged 12, Jane Agnes decided to leave as well and had a job with Frances Martindale (newly married and living in the Lyth ). John Burrows of Hill Top, Hubbersty Head and Parson Wilson wanted her to continue her education, as she was a bright girl, and to take up training using the inheritance that she had been left by Gt Aunt Aggie ‘for her education and maintenance’. But old Mrs Martindale of Mearsons, a great friend and confidante of Grandma Bownas (Agnes Pearson) took Jane Agnes to the solicitors to persuade him that Grandma Bownas still needed the money to help support her - even though she was being paid a wage. It is remembered that Frances Martindale had given Jane Agnes a dress length which she had made up to impress the solicitor, for the occasion. However Grandma Martindale had decided she was too smart and must go looking needy. The solicitor was persuaded and she remained in service with Frances Martindale. She later moved to Damson Fold to work for the Dickinsons. (but according to the book Cameos of Crosthwaite Henry Dickinson died in 1884 and left Dawson Fold to Arthur Hoggarth in his Will. The farm of 85 acres was tenanted by Matthew Walling, son of Elizabeth Martindale whose grandmother was a Dickinson of Dawson Fold). It would not have allowed a very lengthy stay for Jane Agnes at Dawson Fold. It must have been at this time that William Bownas came looking for her and dragged her back to Whicham with a golden guinea stitched into her stays. There is no doubt that every time there was a baby expected in the Bownas Family she was ‘required back at home’ whether it be Whicham Mill, Crop a Bank, or Staveley. When Jane Agnes was 16 the Trustees of her inheritance and her mother insisted that she took up an apprenticeship. So in 1887 she was apprenticed as a tailor to Park and Heads in Kendal and found lodgings in the Lound . She came back to her grandmother at the Yews for weekends Jane Agnes Pearson joined her mother in Barrow at her mother’s request in 1889. Married at Barrow on April 12th 1892 to Robert Hogarth Dodgson of Preston and Barrow |
