"Agnes Pearson (13 Jan 1791 - 24 May 1876) in her later years was also known as Auld Aunt Aggie. Her brother, Joseph Pearson (b. 1799), had an unmarried granddaughter, Agnes Pearson (b. 1851), who at the age of 20 had given birth to a baby girl in 1871. Her Great Aunt Agnes Pearson, age 81, helped the disgraced young woman by agreeing to take in and raise the baby on condition that the child be named Agnes Pearson and that she would become the heir of Great Aunt Agnes (Auld Aunt Aggie). This was agreed to and Aunt Aggie raised the child for 5 years before dying in 1876. The child, Jane Agnes Pearson, inherited Great Aunt Aggie’s estate and it was put under the control of a Trustee/Solicitor until Jane Agnes became of age. Sometime after Jane Agnes was born in 1871, Great Aunt Aggie, it is thought, started making arrangements for a young local man, William Fletcher Bownas, to marry the child’s mother for a sum of money. The child’s mother, Agnes Pearson, married William F. Bownas on August 8, 1874 and they started their own family while Great Aunt Aggie was still raising and caring for young Jane Agnes Pearson. After Great Aunt Aggie’s death in 1876, Jane Agnes came to live her natural mother, Agnes Pearson Bownas, and her husband, William Fletcher Bownas. She attended school and was a bright student. Around the age of 12 she decided to leave school and go to work (in service) for the Francis Martindale family. Later, she moved to Damson Fold to work for the Dickensons. Not long after this her step-father, William Fletcher Bownas, came looking for her and dragged her back to Whicham with a gold guinea stitched into her stays. There is no doubt that every time there was a baby expected in the Bownas family she was ‘required back at home’ whether it be Whicham Mill, Crop-a-Bank, or Stavely. When Jane was 16 the Trustees of her inheritance and her mother insisted that she take up an apprenticeship. So, in 1887 she was apprenticed as a tailor to Park and Heads in Kendal and found lodging in the Lound, where she was born 16 years earlier. She came back to her grandmother at the Yews for weekends. Jane Agnes joined her mother in Barrow at her mother’s request in 1889. Jane Agnes married Robert Hogarth Dodgson of Preston and Barrow on April 12, 1892, in Barrow.” |
