Then in 1900 he was admitted to St. John’s College, Cambridge where he obtained his BA five years later. Although he and a fellow student are recorded as a ‘Student at Cambridge University’ in the census of 1901 they turn up as lodgers on a farm in Barton Turf, Norfolk for some reason. After leaving Cambridge in 1905 Edwin took up the position of Assistant Master at Uplands House Preparatory School, Epsom. Edwin was at St. John’s School, Leatherhead at the 1891 census. This had been a free school founded in 1851 for the sons of poor clergymen but was going though a period of major change that would transform it into a traditional ‘Public School’ at this time.
