Edwin was at St. John’s School, Leatherhead at the 1891 census. This had been a free school founded in 1851 for the sons of poor clergymen but was going though a period of major change that would transform it into a traditional ‘Public School’ at this time. There was an article in ‘The Spalding Free Press’ [9th August 1898] on him:-

“Bourne: Mr. Edwin D. F. Canham, son of the Reverend H. R. Canham, Master of Bourne Grammar School, has succeeded in carrying off the County Scholarship awarded by Kesteven County Council. The Scholarship is a valuable one, being worth about £50 a year, tenable for two years at the University. We have great pleasure in congratulating Mr. Canham on his success, which we trust is the prelude to a distinguished University career.”

His alumni entry makes a reference to Nottingham University College after leaving Leatherhead. Then in 1900 he was admitted to St. John’s College, Cambridge where he obtained his BA five years later. Although he and a fellow student are recorded as a ‘Student at Cambridge University’ in the census of 1901 they turn up as lodgers on a farm in Barton Turf, Norfolk for some reason. After leaving Cambridge in 1905 Edwin took up the position of Assistant Master at Uplands House Preparatory School, Epsom. He did not leave here until 1929 when he moved to a new teaching post at Westhill Park School, Titchfield, Farneham.
