History told by Soon-hee Kim Suh The second daughter, Kim So-aae married to a man with the last name Han, but the marriage was broken when her daughter, Han Chung-sook, was a young child. Although she did not get much education, Aunt So-aee was very intelligent and independent woman and became a Christian in an Anglican churge in Pyung-yang, North Korea. The Anglican priest or bishop in Pyung-yang, named Chadwell, was godfather of Chung-sook and he lived with Aunt So-aae's family. She managed to send her daughter to Ewha College (which became Ewha University). Chung-Sook married to Lee Sun-kuen, a doctor with an M.D. from Seoul University and they had two sons and a daughter. Aunt So-aee and her daughter's family moved to Pusan in South Korea immediately before or after the end of World War II. After the Korean War, they lived in Seoul. Chung-sook's oldest son became a doctor but died in 19894 at about age 40. His wife and two children live in Seoul but I do not know their names. The other two children, Hei-ok and Dae-yang (nick name) immigrated to Canada. Aunt So-aae was the only closest relative of our father who lived in South Korea and our father was very close to her. OUr family and her family shared many family events such as weddings, special birthdays, etc. Through her life, her family lived in upper middle class and modern lifestyles influenced by the close family relationships with Mr. Chadwell. When Aunt So-aae lived in Pyung-yang, our brother Hae-ahm was sent to live with her for 2-3 years so that he could attend a school at a big city. At that time our parents lived in Manchuria, now part of China, operating a large scale dairy farm which was in a remote countryside and school was too far away from home. That occasion enriched Hae-Ahm's early childhood, exposing him to new and modern things and also, I believe, gave him inspiration and ambition to search for better life. |
