History by Soon-Hee Kim Suh: Our grandfather, Kim Kwan-sik was a famer. Being a youngest son and apparently with no inheritance he was very poor when he was a youth. He worked as a farm hand in Bak-Chun, Hwang-hae-do province. Then he was adopted by a land-owner farmer, Chang Shin-Ok, who had no son. While he was in Chang's family he married to our grandmother. After his adoptive parents passed away, Kwan-sik reclaimed his original family name, Kim, as some used to do. Our father Bong-kuk remembered that he and his father used to visit his grandparents Changs and offered bows in New Year's Day and other holidays. He also said, after his grandparents Chang passed away he and his father used to go to their graves which was not too far from their house (Bak-chun village, White River), and cut weeds and offer bows on holidays. |
