Rebbe Abraham Mordekhai Alter The Gerer Rebbe, who was one of the founders and Leaders of Agudas Yisroel He was a tremendous supporter of Eretz HaKodish (Palestine prior to 1948)and vigourously encouraged his Hasidim to emigrate there at the same timeas actively discouraging them from emigrating to America. He undertook seVeral trips to Eretz Hakoddish first in 1921 then 1927again during the 1930's. When the Nazi's invaded Poland and the War broke out the Rebbe mOved toWarsaw in 1939. His cousin Moishe Prager writes in his book "The miracle of the rescueof the Gerrer Rebbe" how the Rebbe was persuaded to Leave his wife andchildren and escape the Ghetto, then fLee Warsaw and go Italy andfinally via ship to Eretz Ha Koddish (Palestine) and Jerusalem. He was caught in the 1948 War of Independance in Jerusalem. WhenJerusalem was surrounded and cut off he refused to Leave. He died duringthe Siege of Jerusalem on 3 June 1948 25 Iyar 5708 The Rebbes intention through his life was to strengthen true Hasidism, which suffered Greatly with the First World War and the Shoah. He worked hard within the Agudas Yisroel in order to strengthenYiddishkeit. The Gerer Rebbe, first of all, began to strengthen the Gerer communityin Ger. Then to all Gerer shtiblekh in all Corners of Poland. Many Hassidim travelled to Ger for Yom Tovim to be with the Rebbe He vigourously promoted distinctive dress and behaviour he believedshould be according to their version of Hasidism. Gerrer Hassidim weredistinguished by the clothing and behavior. They wore peyes hanging down(and out) and a cravat. As matter of fact, a Hasidic [necktie] wasforbidden. They wore silk hats with a skullcap underneath, their pantswere Tucked into the socks, and they wore gartlen (belts around theirwaist) and they wore a large talis-kotn over their sHirts (undergarmentwith Tassels at four Corners worn by Orthodox men) according to the lawthat one should be able to make a bracha. the women were very fastidious about the sLeeve or dress length, suchthat on even of small children, should not be too Short and, in generalGerrer Hassidim were much stricter than other Hassidim that everything inthe home should be carried out according to their version of Hasidism.Ger created the organization of the Beis-Yakov Shuln (schools) and laterthe Daughters of Agudas Yisroel schools for girls. Many Gerrer Hassidim were taken together during the general expulsionfrom the Warsaw Ghetto to Treblinka, where they were murders al kiddushHashem. Among the first who emigrated to Palestine from the Gerer shtibl betweenthe First and Second World Wars were the brothers Yitzhak and IzraelEjlbert, Yekheiel Tron, Yosef Borzykowski, Moishe Kirsz and MoisheBinyamin Lakhman and his family. |
