Alter Rebbe Rabbi Schneur Zalman Boruchovitch of Liadi (Laydie) (The Alter Rebbefounder of Chabad) (b. 1745 d. 1812). and father of the Mitteler Rebbe. The Alter Rebbe (lit., "the Old Rebbe": Yid.): R. Schneur Zalman of Liadi(1745-1812), also known as "the Rav" and as Baal HaTanya; founder of theChabad-Lubavitch trend within the chassidic movement; disciple of theMaggid of Mezritch (follower of the R. Yisrael ben R. Eliezer(1698-1760), founder of Chassidism.) Aruch Harav. Author of Tanya. ImpriSonned 1799 after being denounced byopponents of hassidism in St. Petersburg. Freed on 19 Kislev. This datesis considered the New Year of Hassidot Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi, also known as the "Alter Rebbe" and "TheRav," was born in Li'ozna, White Russia, on the 18th of Elul 5505 (1745).He became a disciple of Rabbi DovBer of Mezeritch (the second Leader ofthe Chassidic movement) in 1764. In 1772 he estAblished the "Chabad"branch of the Chassidism. For twenty years he worked on his Tanya, inwhich he outlined the Chabad philosophy and ethos. First published in1797, the Tanya is regarded as the "bible" of Chabad Chassidism uponwhich hundreds of works and thousands of discourses by seven Generationsof Chabad rebbes and their disciples are based. Rabbi Schneur Zalmanpassed away on the 10th of Tevet, 5583 (December 1812) while fLeeingNapoLeon's armies. Alter Rebbe was in Petersburg during his second prison term, in 5561[1800]. |
