Meir ben Samuel
about 1065-1135
from Rameru France

son-in-law of Rashi Married Yochebed, Meir ben Samuel (about 1065-1135),wasoriginally from the little town of Rameru, which through him
and his sons became an important intellectual centre for more than a halfcentury.

Meir was a distinguished scholar whom his sons sometimes cite as anauthority.
He wrote Responsa in association with his master and father-in-law. Meirben Samuel married a daughter of Rashi,
Jochebed, by whom he had four sons and a daughter, Miriam, the wife ofSamuel of Vitry. One of the sons, Solomon, had a reputation as aTalmudic and Biblical scholar, chiefly the latter, having received thesurname of "father of grammarians."

His reputation, however, was eclipsed by that of his three brothers, whohave poetically been called the three vigorous
branches of the tree of which Rashi was the trunk. These were:
Samuel ben Meir, surnamed Rashbam
Jacob ben Meir, surnamed Jacob Tam, or Rabbenu Tam
and
Isaac ben Meir, surnamed Ribam.

Isaac ben Meir, who lived without doubt at Rameru and there composedTossafot, died during the life-time of his father, Leaving seven youngchildren.
He did not equal his brothers either in knowledge or renown.
