Info is from the "Humboldt History Book"
Walter Hill was born and raised on a farm near Miniota, Manitoba. He helped pick stones to build a huge stone house for his Father and Mother in 1902 and 1903. Walter and Seth Campbell came out to Humboldt in June, 1906, when he filed for homestead on the SW 28-35-24-W2. Walter returned to Manitoba for the winter, then in the spring of 1907 came back and broke some land. He later planted fifteen acres of wheat. In the next three years he improved the required amount of land to get his title in 1910.
There were many bachelors those days, but also many families who had come to homestead, one family being the Pococks who came out from England. The family consisted of a Father and Mother and seven girls and five boys. These girls were quite an attraction!! In 1913 Walter Hill married Gertrude Pocock. That same year Chester was born. Chester lived on this same farm until 1980 when he retired to Humboldt. Muriel was born in 1916, and stayed at home until 1935 when she married Charlie Sutherland and moved two miles east. Another daughter, Gertrude was born in 1917. Shortly after this Mrs Gertrude Pocock passed away. The Hill children then went to Manitoba to live with Mrs. Florence Bell, Walter's sister. Gertrude Hill passed away in 1918. Chester and Muriel then came back to live with their father in 1922, who hired married couples to look after them.
Walter was very interested and active in sports. He was a member of the football team and the rifle range. Families made their own fun having house parties, pie and box socials, shivarees, and dances with local musicians.
In 1915 Glynfield school District was organized, with Walter as Chairman. He served as trustee for 21 years. Church services were started in the school with Walter being an elder and a member of the church board. Duties were carried out when services were held in Brithdir Church.
Walter farmed until 1936, when Chester was married and took over the farm. In later years he lived mostly with his sister, Mrs Maud Bell, in Humboldt then to Bethany Home in Middle Lake. He passed away in St. Mary's Villa in 1967.
