Caerphilly Castle was built around 1270 by the Anglo-Norman lord, Gilbert de Clare, lord of Glamorgan, and is one of the largest Castles in the United Kingdom. The castle covers around 30 acres making it the biggest castle in Wales and alongwith its lakes, and three artificial islands the castle has survived attacks. Early this century the Marquis of Bute extensively restored the castle and it is now cared for by the Welsh Historic Monuments Commission. The castle is open to the public and plays host to a number of events, banquets and private functions. |
